Hanuman and the Rising Sun

A child mistook the sun for a fruit. In his hunger was hidden the seed of limitless devotion.

As an infant, Hanuman woke hungry before dawn. Through the trees he saw the sun climbing red and round over the hills, and decided it was the ripest mango he had ever seen.

He leapt. Wind was his father, so the sky held no fear for him; he crossed the clouds and reached toward Surya himself. Indra, alarmed, struck the child with his thunderbolt and Hanuman fell to earth with a broken jaw.

Vayu, grief-stricken, withdrew the breath from the worlds until the gods relented. They revived the boy and blessed him with strength beyond measure, immunity to weapons, and a life as long as he wished. Yet they also veiled his memory of these powers, so that pride would never find room in him.

Years later, on the shore of the ocean with Lanka far away, Jambavan reminded Hanuman of who he was. Only then, in service to Rama rather than to hunger, did the boy who chased the sun learn what he could truly do.
