Kundli matching and Guna Milan: a practical guide
Kundli matching, also called Kundali matching or Guna Milan, is a traditional Vedic astrology approach to comparing two birth charts before marriage. The widely used Ashtakoota system considers eight factors based largely on the partners' birth Moon signs and nakshatras. Together these factors offer a maximum of 36 gunas. The number can start a conversation about compatibility, but it is not a prediction of whether a marriage will succeed.

Our calculation uses Lahiri ayanamsa
We use the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsa for Kundli matching. Ayanamsa is the angular offset used to translate tropical zodiac positions into sidereal positions. Lahiri is a particular convention for that offset; it is not an extra compatibility factor or a bonus added to the Guna score.
The matching calculation is supplied by Prokerala with its Lahiri setting, ayanamsa 1. This is a calculation from birth details, not an AI-generated score. Your selected birthplace supplies coordinates and a timezone so that the entered local birth time can be interpreted. It is different from matching newspaper Sun-sign date ranges, and different from comparing names alone.
Two websites can show different results if they use different ayanamsas, birth times, timezones, chart settings or scoring conventions. A Moon position close to a sign or nakshatra boundary deserves particular care. Before comparing scores, check that both services used identical inputs and the same zodiac convention.
The eight Ashtakoota factors and their points
Ashta means eight and koota means a matching factor. The maximum points rise from one for Varna to eight for Nadi, giving 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36. Individual factors can receive partial points. A fractional total is therefore not necessarily an error.
Varna — up to 1 point
Traditionally compares spiritual temperament and attitudes to responsibility. It is the smallest part of the total and should not be treated as a measure of a person's worth or social status.
Vashya — up to 2 points
Looks at traditional categories of mutual influence and attraction. Its symbolism is about how two temperaments interact, not permission for one partner to control the other.
Tara — up to 3 points
Compares the partners' birth stars by counting between their nakshatras. Traditionally it is interpreted in relation to well-being and fortune; it is not a medical assessment.
Yoni — up to 4 points
Uses symbolic animal categories assigned to nakshatras to discuss instinctive and intimate compatibility. Real intimacy also depends on consent, communication, trust and individual preferences.
Graha Maitri — up to 5 points
Compares the traditional friendship relationships between the lords of the two Moon signs. It is interpreted as mental rapport and shared outlook, rather than a test of intelligence.
Gana — up to 6 points
Groups birth stars into Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa temperaments. These are traditional symbolic categories, not moral labels: no category makes someone good, bad or unsuitable as a person.
Bhakoot — up to 7 points
Examines the relative positions of the partners' Moon signs. Some sign relationships receive fewer points and are called Bhakoot dosha. Interpretation requires context and may differ between traditions.
Nadi — up to 8 points
Compares the traditional Adi, Madhya and Antya classifications of birth stars. It carries the greatest weight. Nadi matching cannot diagnose inherited conditions, fertility or the health of future children.
What does a score out of 36 mean?
A common traditional rule of thumb treats 18 or more gunas as an acceptable starting point, 24 or more as a stronger score, and 30 or more as a very high score. These bands are interpretive conventions, not scientifically validated success rates. A result of 24/36 means 24 matching points were awarded; it does not mean a 67% probability of a happy marriage.
A low score is a reason to understand the individual factors, not to panic or automatically reject a partner. A high score should not override real concerns such as coercion, dishonesty, disrespect or incompatible expectations. Shared values, emotional safety, communication, money decisions and willingness to resolve conflict matter directly in everyday married life.
Nadi dosha, Bhakoot and Manglik: look beyond the total
Nadi and Bhakoot are part of the 36-point calculation. Manglik dosha is a separate chart consideration involving Mars; it is not a ninth koota and cannot be inferred simply from the Guna total. This instant score does not by itself establish either partner's Manglik status, confirm a dosha cancellation or prescribe a remedy.
If a factor receives zero, ask which rule produced that result and which school of interpretation is being followed. Cancellation rules vary, and a general rule found online is not proof that it applies to your chart. A qualified practitioner should explain the relevant placements rather than relying on a frightening label.
For a love marriage with a low Guna score or Nadi dosha, use the result as a prompt for a balanced discussion with your partner and family. Do not buy expensive rituals because someone guarantees they will prevent harm. Spiritual practices are personal choices, not substitutes for medical advice, relationship counselling or informed consent.
Birth time accuracy and traditional partner ordering
Use the recorded date and local time of birth when available, and choose the actual birth city rather than your current home. Do not enter an estimated time as though it were exact. Uncertainty matters especially near a Moon-sign or nakshatra boundary; more detailed chart checks can be even more sensitive to time.
The provider's traditional calculation uses bride and groom inputs. DivineAdda maps those inputs from the entered gender; when that does not identify the roles, partner one is used as the bride-side input and partner two as the groom-side input. Some rules depend on this ordering. The traditional categories have limitations and do not represent every relationship; they should never be used to judge a person's dignity or identity.
