How to Set Up a Simple Home Puja Space
A practical guide to creating a clean, calm altar at home — direction, essentials and daily rhythm.
A home altar does not need to be large. It needs to be clean, consistent and yours.
Choose the direction
Traditionally the altar faces east or north-east, so the person praying faces the rising sun. If your home does not allow it, choose the quietest corner instead — regularity matters more than geometry.
The essentials
A small chowki or shelf, a diya, an incense holder, a bell, a water vessel and one image or murti you feel connected to. Resist filling the space; each object should have a reason to be there.
A daily rhythm
Light the diya, ring the bell, offer water and chant one mantra 11 or 108 times. Five honest minutes each morning will outlast an elaborate ritual you keep postponing.
