What Is Sharad Purnima? Meaning and Other Names
Sharad Purnima is the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashwin, when the monsoon ends and the clear skies of the Sharad (autumn) season begin. Names vary by region:
- Kojagiri or Kojagara Purnima: Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra and Mithila, for Lakshmi worship and night vigil
- Raas Purnima: the night of Krishna's Maha Raas
- Kumara Purnima: Odisha, linked to Kartikeya and the worship of the moon by unmarried girls
- Sharad Poonam: Gujarat
- Kaumudi Purnima: "the moonlight full moon"
Why Sharad Purnima Is Special: Moon, Lakshmi and Krishna
The Moon With 16 Kalas
Tradition holds that on this night the moon shines with all 16 kalas (phases of perfection) and is at its most radiant and cooling. The moon is linked to the mind, calm and nourishment in Vedic thought, so the night is considered good for prayer, meditation and gratitude. The belief that the moon's rays carry "amrit" is a traditional one and is not a scientific claim.
Goddess Lakshmi and "Ko Jagarti"
On this night Goddess Lakshmi is believed to descend and ask, "Ko jagarti?" ("Who is awake?"), blessing those who are awake and worshipping. That is the origin of the name Kojagara. According to Puranic tradition, Lakshmi also emerged from the ocean during the churning on a full moon of Ashwin. Read the story in The Sacred Wisdom of Samudra Manthan.
Krishna's Maha Raas
In the Bhagavata Purana (the Rasa Panchadhyayi chapters, Canto 10), Krishna performs the divine Raas Leela with Radha and the gopis of Vrindavan under the autumn full moon. For Krishna devotees this is the heart of the night, which is why it is called Raas Purnima.
Sharad Purnima Puja Vidhi: Step by Step
- Clean the home and draw rangoli at the entrance. Light a lamp in the evening.
- Bathe and wear clean clothes, and take a sankalp for the day's observance.
- Set up the puja space. See our guides to setting up a home puja space and the Vastu of the puja room.
- Remember Ganesha first, then worship Lakshmi.
- Prepare the kheer (see below) and keep it ready.
- Worship in the evening and at Nishita Kaal (about 11:59 PM to 12:49 AM), following your family custom.
- Offer arghya to the moon, then place the kheer in the moonlight.
- Take the prasad the next morning or after the night puja, as per your tradition.
Kojagara Lakshmi Puja
- Place a picture or idol of Goddess Lakshmi (many families also worship Vishnu or Satyanarayan)
- Offer white or pink flowers (lotus if available), akshat, kumkum, fruit and sweets
- Light ghee diyas and incense, and read the vrat katha
- Do the aarti, and keep a lamp lit through the night
Moon Worship and Arghya
- When the moon is visible, offer water, and in some traditions milk, with folded hands
- Chant a Chandra mantra (see below)
- Place the kheer in the moonlight afterward
Night Jagran
Staying awake with bhajans, kirtan, a katha or quiet prayer is the heart of Kojagara. If you cannot stay awake all night, do what your health allows and take part in the Nishita puja.
Sharad Purnima Kheer Under the Moon: Vidhi and Safety
Kheer is the signature offering of the night.
How to prepare:
- Cook kheer with milk, rice, sugar or jaggery, cardamom and dry fruits
- Let it cool, then pour it into a clean vessel (silver is traditional, but any clean vessel works)
- Cover it with a thin, clean cloth or mesh to keep insects out
- Place it where the moonlight falls (terrace, balcony or courtyard) after moonrise
How long to leave it: many families leave it through the night and eat it as prasad the next morning. Food-safety note: milk dishes spoil. Limit the time outdoors to a few hours, keep it covered and clean, and then store it in the refrigerator, or eat it promptly. Skip it if you have a sensitive stomach, and don't give it to infants or the elderly if you're unsure it is fresh.
Why kheer? Tradition says the cool, nourishing kheer takes on the moon's qualities. In Ayurveda, the Sharad season is associated with pitta, and cooling, sweet foods are favoured. This is a traditional and seasonal belief, not a medical claim.
Sharad Purnima Vrat Rules
- Many devotees fast during the day and break the fast after the moon puja and kheer prasad
- A fruit and milk fast is common. Choose what suits your health and tradition.
- Avoid onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food and alcohol on this day, as per common custom
- Keep a calm mind, speak kindly, and avoid anger and quarrels
- Pregnant women, the elderly and anyone with a medical condition should consult a doctor before fasting
Sharad Purnima Katha
Several stories are told on this night.
The Moneylender's Two Daughters
A moneylender had two daughters who both kept the Sharad Purnima fast. The elder completed the fast with full devotion. The younger broke it halfway, and her children did not survive. She asked her elder sister for help. When the elder sister's child touched the lifeless baby, it revived, because of the merit of her fast. After that, the younger sister kept the fast with full devotion. The story teaches sincerity and steadfast faith. Versions differ by region.
Krishna's Raas Leela
On the autumn full moon, the sound of Krishna's flute drew the gopis from their homes to the forest at Vrindavan, where he danced with each of them in the moonlight. The story is told as a symbol of the soul's longing for the divine. It is the reason this night is celebrated as Raas Purnima.
