Dosh kya hai? The meaning, simply
Dosh (also spelled dosha) is a Sanskrit word meaning a fault, flaw, or imbalance. In Vedic astrology, a dosh is an unfavorable planetary configuration in a birth chart (kundli) that tradition associates with specific difficulties — usually around marriage, health, career, or family life. In English, "dosh" is most closely translated as an affliction or defect in the chart.
One thing to keep in mind throughout this guide: a dosh is an indication, not a verdict. Most doshas have well-known cancellation conditions (called bhanga), which is why two people can share the same dosh on paper and have very different charts overall. That is why the chart needs to be read as a whole, by a qualified astrologer, before anyone acts on a single dosh.
Kundli mein dosh kaise dekhen?
Every dosh in this guide is worked out from your exact date, time, and place of birth. A small error in birth time can change your ascendant (Lagna) and shift which houses planets fall in, which is exactly what most doshas depend on. So the first step is always a correctly calculated chart. If you don't have one, our Professional Kundli Report is built from your exact birth details and includes planetary positions, house analysis and dasha-related analysis. Mangal Dosh (Manglik Dosh kya hai)
Mangal Dosh (also called Manglik Dosh or Kuja Dosh) occurs when Mars sits in certain houses of the kundli — most commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th (some traditions also count the 2nd). Mars is the planet of energy, aggression and drive, and its placement in the houses linked to the self, home, partnership and longevity is traditionally associated with friction in marriage.
Common cancellation conditions: both partners being Manglik, Mars sitting in its own or exalted sign, or a benefic influence such as Jupiter's aspect on Mars or the 7th house. Because of this, being Manglik does not automatically mean marriage problems.
Traditional remedies: worship of Lord Hanuman on Tuesdays, Mangal Shanti puja, and fasting on Tuesdays. For couples, a proper compatibility check is more useful than the dosh alone — see the Kundli Match Making Report.
Kaal Sarp Dosh (Kaal Sarp Dosh kya hai)
Kaal Sarp Dosh is said to form when all seven planets (Sun through Saturn) sit between Rahu and Ketu in the chart, hemmed in on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. Tradition describes twelve types, each named after a serpent (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhchud, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag), depending on which house Rahu occupies.
It is traditionally linked with delays, obstacles and a sense of repeated starts and stops in life. It is also one of the most debated doshas: some astrologers point out that it is not described in classical texts like the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and treat it as a later addition, while others consider it very significant. Both views exist, which is a good reason not to treat it as an alarm bell.
Kaal Sarp Dosh puja is most famously performed at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and also at Ujjain and Srikalahasti. Nag Panchami is traditionally considered a favorable day for this puja.
Pitra Dosh (Pitru Dosh kya hota hai)
Pitra Dosh (also spelled Pitru Dosh) is associated with unresolved obligations to ancestors, and in the chart it is commonly read from the Sun, Rahu or Ketu affecting the 9th house (the house of father and ancestry). Common causes cited in tradition are neglected Shraddha rites or an ancestor's untimely death. Pitru Paksha is the most effective window for remedies. We have a full guide on this: Pitru Dosha: Meaning, Signs and How to Perform Nivarana Puja, and if you need the exact dates, see the Shradh 2026 tithi calendar.
Pitra dosh ke upay (remedies): Tarpan and Shraddha, Pind Daan (Gaya Shraddha is considered the most complete), feeding crows and cows, and reciting the Pitru Stotram or Pitru Gayatri Mantra.
Nadi Dosh (Nadi Dosh kya hota hai)
Nadi Dosh is a compatibility dosh, not a personal one. It appears in Kundli Milan (marriage matching) under the Ashtakoot system, where Nadi carries the highest weight — 8 of the 36 Guna Milan points. Every person is assigned one of three Nadis (Adi, Madhya or Antya) based on their birth nakshatra. When the bride and groom share the same Nadi, Nadi Dosh is said to arise and Nadi scores zero.
Tradition links it with concerns about the health of children and the couple's physical compatibility. It is also one of the most commonly cancelled doshas — for example, when the couple's Rashi lords are the same, or their nakshatras or padas differ in specific ways. Because it only exists in a comparison of two charts, it can't be judged from one kundli alone; the Kundli Match Making Report compares both charts and returns Guna Milan scoring and dosh-related information. (Note: some "Nadi Dosh" searches are for a film with that title; this guide covers the astrological concept.)
Shani Dosh
Shani Dosh covers the difficulties traditionally linked to an unfavorable Saturn — including Saturn's placement in challenging houses, and the well-known Sade Sati (roughly seven and a half years when Saturn transits the sign before, of, and after your Moon sign) and Dhaiya (about two and a half years). Saturn is the planet of discipline, delay and consequence, so its periods are typically described as testing rather than purely negative — many charts show Saturn giving strong results after a slow start. Remedies: Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays, service to elders and those in need, and lighting a sesame-oil lamp on Saturday evenings.
Rahu Dosh, Chandal Dosh and Grahan Dosh
Rahu Dosh describes Rahu's influence when it sits badly in the chart, traditionally linked to confusion, sudden disruptions, obsessive patterns and delays. Two related, named combinations often come up in searches:
- Guru Chandal Dosh — Jupiter conjunct Rahu, said to cloud judgment and the guidance normally given by Jupiter.
- Grahan Dosh (eclipse dosh) — the Sun or Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu, traditionally linked to emotional turbulence or difficulties around self-confidence.
Remedies usually involve Rahu-related mantras, charity on Saturdays, and worship of Durga or Shiva depending on the family tradition.
Vastu Dosh (Vastu Dosh kya hota hai)
Vastu Dosh is different from the kundli doshas above — it refers to a defect in a building's layout, entrance or room placement relative to Vastu Shastra principles, believed to disturb the flow of positive energy at home. Common examples include a cluttered Northeast corner, a kitchen or toilet in an inauspicious direction, or a main door in a poor position. Many issues can be improved with simple, practical fixes rather than structural changes. See Vastu Tips for Diwali 2026 for a room-by-room guide, and How to Set Up a Simple Home Puja Space for the correct direction and placement of the puja area.
Nazar Dosh (evil eye)
Nazar Dosh is the belief that envy or excessive admiration can bring harm to a person, child, home or business. Traditional protections include a black kala tika, hanging a lemon-and-chilli string, and simple household rituals. It is a folk and cultural concept rather than something read from the kundli.
Not every "dosh" is an astrology term
Several queries in this space belong to other fields entirely, so it helps to know the difference:
- Drishti dosh / nikat drishti dosh / dur drishti dosh — in Hindi medical usage, these describe eye conditions: nikat drishti dosh is nearsightedness (myopia) and dur drishti dosh is farsightedness (hypermetropia). These are vision problems to be checked by an eye doctor, not astrological doshas. (In astrology, drishti separately means a planet's "aspect" on another house.)
- Pitta dosh — in Ayurveda, dosha refers to the three body-mind energies (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). Pitta dosha relates to heat, digestion and metabolism, and has no connection with kundli doshas.

A balanced way to think about doshas
Doshas are a traditional way of naming patterns in a chart, and most come with cancellations, degrees of strength and remedies. None of them is a fixed destiny, and none should be the sole reason to reject a marriage, a career move or a decision. Treat a dosh as one input to be read with the rest of the chart and with sensible, practical judgment.
