Why is Krishna Janmashtami Celebrated?

Janmashtami marks the divine birth of Lord Krishna in Mathura. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Krishna appeared at midnight inside King Kansa's prison to Devaki and Vasudeva to destroy evil and establish Dharma.

Despite heavy security, divine intervention enabled Vasudeva to carry the infant Krishna across the overflowing Yamuna River to Gokul, where He was lovingly raised by Nanda Baba and Yashoda.

The Birth Story of Lord Krishna

King Kansa imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after hearing a heavenly prophecy that Devaki's eighth child would destroy him.

Kansa killed the first six children.

The seventh child, Balarama, was miraculously transferred to Rohini through Lord Vishnu's divine power.

At midnight on the eighth day, Lord Krishna appeared in His divine four-armed form before Devaki and Vasudeva, assuring them of His mission.

The prison doors opened automatically, the guards fell asleep, and Vasudeva carried Krishna across the Yamuna River while Sheshnag spread His hood to protect the child from heavy rain.

Krishna was exchanged with baby Yogamaya in Gokul. When Kansa tried to kill the infant, Yogamaya revealed her divine form and declared that his destroyer had already been born.

Lord Krishna's birth represents:
