Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 kab hai? Dev Uthani Ekadashi (also called Devutthana, Prabodhini or Dev Uthni Gyaras) is on Friday, 20 November 2026 for Smarta households, and many Vaishnava traditions observe it on Saturday, 21 November. The Ekadashi tithi runs from about 7:15 AM on 20 November to about 6:31 AM on 21 November. The fast is broken (parana) on 21 November, about 1:11 PM to 3:18 PM in Delhi. Tulsi Vivah follows, on 21 November in most calendars. This is the day Lord Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep, Chaturmas ends and the wedding season opens.
This guide covers the date, the 20 or 21 November question, the vrat vidhi, the katha, Tulsi Vivah and what changes after Chaturmas. Customs vary by region and family, so follow your own tradition where it differs.

Is It 20 or 21 November? Smarta and Vaishnava Dates
The tithi begins on the morning of 20 November and ends on the morning of 21 November, so two observances are common:
- Smarta tradition (most households): fast on Friday, 20 November, and break the fast on 21 November
- Vaishnava tradition (many Vaishnavas, including ISKCON-style communities): fast on Saturday, 21 November, and break it on 22 November
If you are not sure which tradition your family follows, ask your family priest or elders. The Ekadashi fast is broken on Dwadashi after sunrise, inside the parana window.

What Is Dev Uthani Ekadashi? Meaning and Names
Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. It is also called:
- Prabodhini Ekadashi (the “awakening” Ekadashi)
- Devutthana or Devuthani Ekadashi
- Haribodhini Ekadashi
- Kartiki Ekadashi
- Dev Uthni Gyaras
According to tradition, on this day Lord Vishnu awakens from his Yoga Nidra (the cosmic sleep) on the ocean of milk, so “Dev Uthani” literally means the gods awakening.
Why Chaturmas Ends Today
Chaturmas is the four-month period of restraint and devotion that begins when Vishnu goes to sleep on Devshayani Ekadashi (25 July in 2026). It ends on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. During Chaturmas, weddings, griha pravesh and other auspicious ceremonies are traditionally paused, and they resume after Vishnu awakens. See our Ekadashi guide for why this fast matters.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi Katha
Why Vishnu Sleeps for Four Months
One popular story says Goddess Lakshmi once told Vishnu he never rested, so the gods and demons never got a break from his work. Vishnu agreed to sleep for four months each year. He lies down on Sheshnag on Devshayani Ekadashi and wakes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, when the world rejoices. You can read how Vishnu appeared in The Sacred Wisdom of Samudra Manthan.
Vrinda, Tulsi and Shaligram
Vrinda was the devoted wife of the demon king Jalandhar. As long as her devotion held, he could not be defeated. To restore the balance, Vishnu used a divine strategy, and Jalandhar was defeated. Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become a stone, and he took the form of the Shaligram. Vrinda later became the Tulsi plant, and Vishnu promised that he would be worshipped only with Tulsi leaves and would marry her every year. That is the origin of Tulsi Vivah. Versions differ by region.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi Vrat Vidhi: Step by Step
Fasting Rules and Food
- Wake early, bathe and take a sankalp to keep the Ekadashi fast
- Avoid rice, wheat and grains, onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food and alcohol, as per Ekadashi rules. Some also avoid pulses.
- Many keep a fruit and milk fast (phalahar). Singhara (water chestnut), sweet potato, sugarcane, ber (jujube), amla and jaggery are traditional.
- Some keep a nirjala fast. Choose what suits your health, and consult a doctor if you are pregnant, elderly or unwell.
- Don’t pluck Tulsi leaves on Ekadashi. Pluck them the day before if you need them for the puja.
Waking Lord Vishnu
- Clean the courtyard and draw the feet of Vishnu (charan) with rice flour paste, leading to the puja space.
- Set up an idol or picture of Vishnu, or a Shaligram, and light a ghee diya.
- Offer flowers, fruit, sweet potato, singhara, ber and jaggery, with Tulsi leaves.
- Wake Vishnu by ringing a bell or beating a thali, and chant the awakening verse (see below).
- Stay awake with bhajans and kirtan if you can, which is the traditional jagran.
- Break the fast on 21 November in the parana window, after puja and daan.
Tulsi Vivah 2026
Tulsi Vivah is the symbolic marriage of the Tulsi plant (Goddess Tulsi, or Vrinda) with Lord Vishnu in the form of Shaligram or Krishna. It is celebrated as a real wedding, with a mandap, music and a feast, and it marks the start of the wedding season.
Tulsi Vivah Date and Muhurat
- Date: Saturday, 21 November 2026 in most calendars (the Dwadashi after Dev Uthani Ekadashi)
- Other days: the Vivah can be done any day from Dev Uthani Ekadashi until Kartik Purnima on 24 November, depending on family custom
- Time: usually in the evening, after sunset
Check a local panchang or ask your priest for the best time in your city.
Tulsi Vivah Samagri (Checklist)
- A healthy Tulsi plant in a pot or courtyard bed
- A Shaligram, or an idol or picture of Vishnu or Krishna
- Sugarcane stalks (four) for the mandap, and a red cloth
- A red chunri (veil), sindoor, bangles, bindi, mehndi and turmeric for Tulsi
- Rice, flowers, incense, ghee diyas and a kalash
- Fruits such as amla, ber, singhara and sweet potato, and sweets or panchamrit
Tulsi Vivah Vidhi
- Clean the area and decorate the Tulsi with the chunri, bangles and sindoor like a bride. Build a mandap with sugarcane.
- Place the Shaligram or Vishnu beside the Tulsi.
- Begin with Ganesha, then take the sankalp for the Vivah.
- Perform the wedding rituals: offer haldi and sindoor, tie the sacred thread and, if your family follows it, circle the pair seven times.
- Chant the mantras (below), offer prasad and do the aarti.
- Share the prasad with family and neighbours.
Tulsi Vivah is a devotional, symbolic ritual. It is not a legal marriage, and the families who host it take it as an auspicious start to the wedding season.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi and the Wedding Season
With Chaturmas over, auspicious ceremonies resume, including weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures. Wedding dates also depend on the panchang and on Jupiter and Venus being visible, not combust, so check the Vivah muhurat list for your city.

Five days from Dev Uthani Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima are called Bhishma Panchak, a period of Vishnu worship and fasting observed in some traditions. It ends with Dev Diwali (Kartik Purnima) on Tuesday, 24 November, when the ghats of Varanasi are lit with lamps in honour of the gods. In Varanasi, a five-day Ganga Mahotsav is held from Prabodhini Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima.
